Srinagar, Feb 06: At least nine to ten structures were gutted in a massive fire that broke out in the Syedpora area of Nowhatta in Srinagar during the early hours of Thursday, officials said.
According to Fire and Emergency Services, a fire call was received by the State Fire Control Room, Batamaloo, at around 3:39 am, following which a fire tender from Fire Station Rainawari rushed to the spot and initiated firefighting operations.
Given the intensity of the blaze and the congested locality, additional fire tenders and manpower were mobilised from several fire stations, including Babdemb, Safakadal, Gowkadal, Maharaj Gunj, Habakadal, Rawalpora, Hazratbal, Nowgam, Brein Nishat, Ganderbal, and the Fire & Emergency Services Headquarters.
Officials said that initially two to three residential houses were involved in the fire, which later intensified due to multiple gas cylinder explosions. However, timely and coordinated efforts by firefighting teams brought the blaze under control, preventing further spread.
During the operation, water was sourced from the reservoirs of Jamia Masjid, for which local residents and the district administration expressed gratitude to the Jamia Masjid Intizamia for its cooperation.
The firefighting operation was led by Deputy Director Fire & Emergency Services, Dr Mir Aqib Hussain, and supervised by Divisional Fire Officers of City and Headquarters, along with in-charges of the responding fire stations.
The department also appreciated the assistance of Police Station Nowhatta and local volunteers, whose support played a key role in containing the fire.
Meanwhile, the ADGP Fire & Emergency Services has advised the public to avoid unnecessary use of electrical appliances during morning peak hours and to strictly adhere to fire safety advisories to prevent such incidents.
No loss of life or injuries was reported in the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials added.
