J&K Reports 32,425 Cancer Cases in 3 Years; 2025 Sees Spike, SKIMS Handles Bulk

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Friday informed the Assembly that 32,425 cancer cases were reported across the Union Territory in the last three years, with nearly 10,000 cases registered in 2025 alone at major tertiary care hospitals.

Replying to separate queries raised by MLAs Waheed ur Rehman Para and Ahsan Pardesi, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo said that lung, breast, oral, cervical, prostate and pancreatic cancers are among the most commonly detected in J&K.

The Minister informed that of the total 32,425 cases reported in three years, 6,804 were registered in the Jammu division between 2023 and 2025, 2,036 in 2023, 2,187 in 2024 and 2,581 in 2025.

In the Kashmir division, 25,621 cases were reported, including 8,021 in 2022, 8,621 in 2023 and 8,979 in 2024.

Providing hospital-wise data for 2025, she said nearly 10,000 cases were registered at key tertiary institutions, including Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Government Medical College Jammu and Government Medical College Srinagar. SKIMS alone has recorded over 16,000 cancer cases during the last three years, reflecting a steady rise in patient inflow.

The Minister said that the increase in reported cases may be attributed to improved diagnostic facilities and better detection rather than a confirmed surge in cancer incidence.
