Monsoon conditions have become active over Jammu & Kashmir. At the same time, the series of Western Disturbances is far from over, with three more weak Western Disturbances set to affect the Union Territory this week in quick succession.
The first Western Disturbance is currently influencing the region and will weaken by tomorrow. The second Western Disturbance will arrive tomorrow night and remain effective until Saturday morning. This will be followed by the third Western Disturbance, which is expected to impact the region from Saturday afternoon through Sunday.
Individually, all three Western Disturbances are weak. But here's the twist: the presence of active monsoon winds over the region is expected to significantly alter the overall weather scenario.
The weak Western Disturbances and the monsoon flow are expected to work in tandem, increasing the likelihood of moderate to heavy showers at times. Their combined influence will also enhance the risk of short-duration intense rainfall, including isolated cloudbursts.
𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁:
Rain and thundershower activity is expected across parts of Jammu & Kashmir over the coming days, with the highest frequency and intensity likely until Friday, followed by a gradual decline thereafter.
The Jammu region is expected to witness the maximum impact, with some areas likely to receive heavy showers. Rainfall will generally occur in spells rather than continuously, but intense short bursts may be sufficient to trigger localized flash floods, waterlogging, and landslides in vulnerable areas.
For the Kashmir region, any rainfall if it occurs will largely be courtesy of the passing Western Disturbances. While widespread heavy rain is not expected, a few places may still experience brief but intense showers. Overall, increased cloud cover and intermittent rainfall are expected to bring temperatures down by a few degrees, providing welcome relief from the ongoing heatwave.
𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲:
1. The risk of isolated cloudbursts and short-duration heavy rainfall will remain elevated over the next few days. Consequently, localized flash floods, mudslides, and landslides cannot be ruled out.
2. Since both the Western Disturbances and the monsoon flow are relatively weak, prolonged rainfall or widespread flooding is not expected. However, water levels in rivers, streams, and nallahs are expected to rise temporarily following heavy spells. It is advisable to avoid unnecessary visits to rivers, streams, and other vulnerable areas during this period.
