US President Donald Trump said the ceasefire and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iran were effectively "over" as he defended the latest US military strikes on Iranian targets following attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Türkiye, Trump said, "We attacked very powerfully last night, the very dangerous people from Iran." Referring to Iran's leadership, he added, "They're sick, there's something wrong with them."
Trump warns Iran of more military action
The US president indicated that Washington would continue responding forcefully to Iranian actions.
"We hit them [Iran] very hard last night. I told them that every time you hit, we hit, and, of course, they're dirty players, so they go after everyone, probably including me."
"We don't like them. I don't like them. They're evil people, and it's the denuclearisation of Iran. And we're going to denuke it," Trump said.
Fresh US strikes and Iran's response
Trump's remarks came after the US launched what it described as "powerful" strikes on Iranian military targets on Wednesday in response to attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation targeted Iranian military infrastructure and warned Tehran would face "heavy costs" for attacking international shipping, marking a sharp escalation despite a fragile ceasefire.
Iran, in turn, warned it would take "decisive measures" to safeguard its national security, accusing Washington of repeatedly violating the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). In a statement, Iran's Foreign Ministry said the US would face consequences for breaching the agreement.
Trump orders trade cut with Spain
Trump also announced that he had directed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to halt all US trade with Spain, calling the country a "terrible partner" in NATO.
The move follows Spain's decision earlier this year to deny the US access to its military bases and airspace for military operations related to Iran.
'I'm very upset with NATO'
The US president also criticised NATO, accusing the alliance of failing to support Washington on Iran.
"I'm very upset with NATO," Trump told reporters.
"I'm not happy with NATO because of what they did with Greenland, and I'm not happy with NATO because of the fact that they didn't want to help us with the number one state sponsor of terror, that's Iran. They were unwilling to help us."
