Television actor Arjun Bijlani and his wife, Neha Swami, have issued a clarification after Neha faced criticism on social media for wearing a T-shirt featuring Urdu words referring to Prophet Muhammad.
In a statement shared on Instagram Stories, the couple said Neha was unaware of the meaning and significance of the writing on the T-shirt when she wore it.
They clarified that the T-shirt had been gifted to Neha by a fan at a mall in Bangkok and that there was no intention to hurt or disrespect the religious sentiments of any individual or community.
“We are sorry for what happened unintentionally and will always be careful in the future with regard to the gifts received,” the statement read.
The couple also expressed respect for all religions, faiths and beliefs, while condemning the abusive comments, curses and threats directed at Neha following the controversy.
Describing the online harassment as distressing and unacceptable, they said a situation arising from a lack of awareness should not become a reason to subject anyone to abuse or threats.
The couple urged people to approach the matter with understanding, sensitivity and compassion and refrain from targeting Neha and her family.
Neha reportedly wore the T-shirt while attending the birthday party of actor Kunal Verma and actor Puja Banerjee’s son in Mumbai, triggering criticism on social media.
The controversy also drew a reaction from Pakistani actor Mishi Khan, who criticised the couple in an Instagram post and called for a public apology.
